James Hoffman Does Caffeine Analysis
My favorite coffee YouTube personality, James Hoffman, recently released a fascinating video testing the amount of caffeine in coffee.
The basis for the video - he was able to get a relatively inexpensive testing device (relatively - like $2500). So he tests various coffee brewing methods, types of specialty coffee and more to try and determine what the caffeine content is in each of them.
Like James, I'm skeptical of most of the laboratory testing on coffee. Not because I think it's inaccurate. I'm just not certain that they're testing the coffee I'm drinking. The majority of these tests test the coffee that the majority of people are drinking - namely, bulk roasted grocery store coffee. Not higher quality specialty coffee. Now, I finally have a little bit of a test that matches what I actually drink.
Some of the results are fascinating. Namely (spoilers):
- Filter coffee has LOTS more caffeine than espresso (seriously!)
- Instant Coffee has less caffeine than filter coffee
- Light roast and Dark roast are … ok, gonna let you watch the video on that one. 😆
Check out the video below and let us know what you think. I found the information very, very interesting and somewhat different than I expected as well. In other words, I learned some stuff! Hope you do too.
